ConceptRatio and Proportion Example

#### Question

The ratio between the number of boys and the number of girls in a class is 4:3 . If there were 20 more boys and 12 less girls, the ratio would have been 2:1. Find the total number of students in
the class.

#### Solution

Let the number of boys and girls in the class be 4x and 3x respectively. According to the given information,

(4x +20) /(3x - 12)= 2/1

4x + 20 = 6x - 24
44 = 2x

x = 22
Therefore,
Number of boys = 4 × 22 = 88
Number of girls = 3 × 22 = 66
∴ Number of students = 88 + 66 = 154
