# Solve the Following Equation and Calculate the Answer Correct to Two Decimal Places: X2 – 5x – 10 = 0. - ICSE Class 10 - Mathematics

#### Question

Solve the following equation and calculate the answer correct to two decimal places:

x2 – 5x – 10 = 0.

#### Solution

x2 – 5x – 10 = 0

Comparing with ax2 + bx + c = 0, we have a = 1, b = –5, c = –10

x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)

=> x = (-(-5) + - sqrt((-5)^2 - 4(1)(-10))) /(2(1)

=> x = (5+- sqrt(25 + 40))/2

=> (5 +- sqrt65)/2

=> x = (5 +- 8.06)/2

=> x = 13.06/2, (-3.06)/2

=> x= 6.53, -1.53
