#### Question

Solve the equation `2x - 1/x = 7`.Write your answer correct to two decimal places.

#### Solution

`2x - 1/x = 7`

`=> (2x^2 -1)/x = 7`

`=> 2x^2 - 1 = 7x`

`=> 2x^2 - 7x - 1 = 0`

Here a = 2, b = -7 and c = -1

`:. x = (-b +- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac))/(2a)`

`= (-(-7) +- sqrt((-7)^2 - 4(2)(-1)))/(2(2))`

`= (7 +- sqrt57)/4 = (7 +- 7.55)/4`

`= (7 + 7.55)/4 and (7 - 7.55)/4 = 3.64 and -0.14`
