With reference to the Union Legislature, answer the following questions:
Give reasons to justify why the Lok Sabha is considered to be more powerful than the Rajya Sabha.
The Lok Sabha is considered more powerful than the Rajya Sabha because of the following reasons:
- A motion of No-Confidence can be moved and passed only in the Lok Sabha. If it is passed, the Government has to resign. As the Rajya Sabha does not have any power over such motion, it is considered not to have real power over the executive.
- Money bills can only be introduced in the Lok Sabha. Also, after it is passed from the Lok Sabha, it is then sent to the Rajya Sabha, where it can be deliberated on for up to 14 days.
- In case of a deadlock over an ordinary bill, the will of the Lok Sabha prevails as its numerical strength is double that of the Rajya Sabha.
