Question

a (a2 + a + 1) + 5 and find its values for (1) a = 0, (2) a = 1, (3) a = − 1.

Solution

a (a2 + a + 1) + 5 = a3 + a2 + a + 5

1) For a = 0, a3 + a2 + a + 5 = 0 + 0 + 0 + 5 = 5

2) For a = 1, a3 + a2 + a + 5 = (1)3 + (1)2 + 1 + 5

= 1 + 1 + 1 + 5 = 8

(3) For a = −1, a3 + a2 + a + 5 = (−1)3 + (−1)2 + (−1) + 5

= − 1 + 1 − 1 + 5 = 4
