Question

If `barX` is the mean of  `X_1`, `X_2` ...............`X_n` and ` bar Y` is the mean of `Y_1`, `Y_2`....................` Y_n` and  `barZ` is the mean `X_1`, `X_2`.............. `X_n`, `Y_1`, `Y_2`, .........................`Y_n` then Z ?

  • `(bar X  + bar Y) / 2`

  • `bar X + bar Y`

  • `(bar X  + bar Y) / n`

  • ` (barX + bar Y) /(2n)`

Solution

If `barX` is the mean of  `X_1`, `X_2` ...............`X_n` and ` bar Y` is the mean of `Y_1`, `Y_2`....................` Y_n` and  `barZ` is the mean `X_1`, `X_2`.............. `X_n`, `Y_1`, `Y_2`, .........................`Y_n`

then Z = `(nx + ny)/ (2n)` = `[n ( bar x + bar y )] /( 2n )` = `(bar x + bar y)/2`
Hence, the correct alternative answer is (A).
