#### Question

The catalogue price of a computer set is Rs. 42,000. The shopkeeper gives a discount of
10% on the listed price. He further gives an off-season discount of 5% on the discounted
price. However, sales tax at 8% is charged on the remaining price after the two successive
discounts. Find

1)the amount of sales tax a customer has to pay

2)the total price to be paid by the customer for the computer set.

#### Solution

List price = Rs.42,000

Discount 10% of Rs. 42,000

= 10/100 x Rs  42000

= Rs. 4,200

⇒ Discounted price = Rs. 42,000 - Rs. 4,200 = Rs. 37,800

Off-season discount = 5% of Rs. 37,800

= 5/100 x Rs 37800

= Rs. 1,890

∴Sale price  = Rs 37800 - Rs 1890 = Rs 35910

1) The amount of sales tax a customer has to pay = 8% of Rs. 35,910

= 8/100 x Rs 35910

= Rs 2872.80

2) The total price, a customer has to pay for the computer = Sale-price + Sales Tax

= Rs. 35,910 + Rs. 2872.80

= Rs. 38782.80
