Solution

Grignard reagent (methyl magnesium iodide) reacts with cadmium chloride to give dimethyl cadmium. When acetyl chloride reacts with dimethyl cadmium, propanone (acetone) is obtained.

\[\ce{2CH3MgI + CdCl2 -> (CH3)2Cd + 2Mg(I) Cl}\]

\[\ce{\underset{Acetyl chloride}{2CH3 - COCl} + \underset{cadmium}{\underset{Dimethyl}{(CH3)2}}Cd -> \underset{(Acetone)}{\underset{Propanone}{2CH3 - CO}} - CH3 + CdCl2}\]
