Say No to Tobacco | ||

Tobacco use is one of the biggest public health hazards the world has ever faced and it is also one of the most preventable causes of death and disability. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), there are more than 1 billion tobacco users worldwide and India is home to 12% of the world’s smokers. It also estimates that 5 million deaths worldwide annually are attributable to tobacco usage i.e., on an average of one person dies every six seconds due to the consumption of tobacco. Looking down upon the older forms of consumption, consumers consume nicotine in modern ways including cigarettes, chillums, cigars, hookahs etc. It invites a number of health risks including cancer and cardiac arrest. The innocent passive smoker is also at a 45% increased risk of a heart attack. However, looking at the ever-increasing consumption of tobacco, it seems that its harmful effects haven’t reached out far and wide. Anti-tobacco education needs to be targeted at decisionmakers, professionals and common citizens including the youth. Efficacy of educational activities in tobacco cessation should be amply demonstrated at various levels. Legislation regarding the use of tobacco products needs to be strengthened to decrease its availability, accessibility and affordability. Our life, body and organs are marvellous creations of nature. Instead of being thankful; tobacco consumers are destroying these gifts. The sooner they realize the hazard they are about to witness and say no to tobacco, the better it is for the environment and the society at large. |
