Question

Give simple chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds.

Phenol and Benzoic acid

Solution

Phenol and benzoic acid can be distinguished by ferric chloride test.

Ferric chloride test:

Phenol reacts with neutral FeCl3 to form an iron-phenol complex giving violet colouration

`6C_6H_5OH + FeCI_3 -> [Fe(OC_6H_5)_6]^(3-) + 3H^(+) + 3Cl^(-)`

Phenol                              Iron-phenol complex(Violet colour)

But benzoic acid reacts with neutral FeCl3 to give a buff coloured ppt. of ferric benzoate.

`3C_6H_5OH + FeCl_3 -> (C_6H_5COO)_3Fe + 3 HCl`

benzoic acid                         Ferric benzoate (Buff coloured ppt)
