The United Nations Organisation was established to maintain peace and ‘promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.’ With reference to this, explain the following:

The composition of the Security Council.

Solution

The United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members in total. There are 5 permanent members – USA, Britain, France, China and Russia. The rest 10 non-permanent members are elected by the United Nations General Assembly by a two-thirds majority for a two-year term.
