Explain why the forest cover in India is shrinking?
Forest cover in India is shrinking because of the following reasons:
(i) Rapid population growth has resulted in the clearing of land for cultivation activities.
(ii) Many forests have been cleared to convert them to pasture lands.
(iii) Overgrazing has resulted in the depletion of forest cover.
(iv) Increasing demand for timber for industrial expansion and urbanisation has led to deforestation.
(v) Construction of multipurpose river valleys has led to the submergence of lands and destruction of forests.
