Solution

Brown Ring Test :The iron (II) iron, Fe2+ reduces nitrate to nitric oxide. The nitric oxide formed reacts with Fe2+ to form a brown coloured complex. Concentrated sulphuric acid is added to an aqueous solution of nitrate ions, it is heated, cooled and then dilute ferrous sulphate solution is added carefully along the sides of the test tube. A brown ring at the junction of the layers of the solution and sulphuric acid is obtained which confirms the presence of nitrate ions in the solution.
