The poem talks about the poet and his beloved Anne. The lady has yellow hair and she wants to dye them in order to impress her lover because she believes that he likes it that way. She wants to look good and beautiful in her lover's eye. However, after a point in time, she understands that it is only God who can love her unconditionally and that she must not worry about the poet’s love. She realizes that it is the inner beauty that matters and not the physical appearance and she need not change her outer self for someone.
