Distinguish between the given pairs of compounds using the test given within brackets:

Iron (II) sulfate and iron (III) sulfate (using ammonium hydroxide)

Solution

On addition of ammonium hydroxide to iron sulfate (II), a dirty green precipitate of Fe (OH)3 is formed. On treating iron sulfate (III) solution with ammonium hydroxide, a reddish brown precipitate of Fe(OH)3 is formed.
