Question

A hole is drilled half way to the centre of the Earth. A body is dropped into the hole. How much will it weigh at the bottom of the hole if the weight of the body on the Earth’s surface is 350 N?

Solution

Given :        W=mg=350N,d=R/2

To Find:      Weight (W_d)

Formula:     g_d=g[1-d/R]

Since W_d=mg[1-d/R]

W_d=350xx[1-(R/2)/R]

=350xx1/2=175

W_d=175N

The body would weigh 175 N half way down to the centre of the earth.
