A ticket is drawn at random from a bag containing tickets numbered from 1 to 40. Find the probability that the selected ticket has a number which is a multiple of 5.

Solution

Let E be the event that the selected ticket has a number that is a multiple of 5. 

Total number of outcomes = 40 

The favourable outcomes of event E are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40. 

Number of favourable outcomes of event E = 8 

Probability that the selected ticket has a number that is a multiple of 5 

`=P(E)`

`=text{Number of favourable outcomes}/text{Total number of outcomes}`

`=8/40`

`=1/5`

Thus, the probability that the selected ticket has a number that is a multiple of 5 is`1/5`.
