Nanded, located on the banks of holy river Godavari, is a backward region in Marathwada of Maharashtra State. The district, along with other parts of Marathwada, was under the reign of Nizam Sansthan. Consequently, it remained backward comparing to other parts of Maharashtra. Particularly, in education arena, it lagged behind. To be more particular, the women of the region became marginalized from the mainstream of education. As far as Nanded city is concerned, some other colleges made a pavement to education. But there was not a single college only for woman which was the demand of time. The parents from minority community and rural area were still reluctant to send their daughters to the co-education college offering higher education. Considering this fact, a group of social workers and activists decided to start a special institute for women education named Nanded Mahila Shikshan Sanstha, Nanded in 1983. Govindraoji Dharmadhikari Barbadekar, Shri. Kamalkishor Kadam, Shri. K R K Avdhani, Shri Purushottam Maheshwari, Dr. Jyoti Deshmukh, Mrs Pratibha Rasal were the prominent founders of the institute. Initially, it was limited to junior college but was extended up to the senior college in 1989. In spite of monetary difficulties and unavailability of land, they started the college on rental basis campus borrowed from Nanded Zila Parishad. Still the college runs on the same place. The institution has purchased land at Wadi (bk) at the close distance where we are looking forward to develop the infrastructure.
The college was started with a sublime aim of imparting education to the girls from rural, backward areas and minority class of the society. The institution still runs on the same basis. The students are from the above mentioned classes and areas where higher education is not available. The students are really from very poor families. Some of the students are from slum areas of the city. The reserved category students are given government scholarships and the general category students from financially weaker section are given financial assistance through Rajarshi Shahu Free Education Scheme which is a unique practice run by the college. The management members, faculties and other donors from society give the financial contribution as social responsibility. It helps the students to solve their small monetary problems.
The college initially offered B. A and B. Com programmes. In the academic year of 2007-08, the BCA programme was started on self-finance basis which was warmly responded by the students, but as the importance of the course declined, the flow of the students also declined. This year, the management took the initiative to start B. Sc. programme. We are trying to develop the science laboratories and other related things to fulfill the requirements of the course.
