Notes

Transplantation:

  • When human organs like the heart, eye, liver, kidney, pancreas, lungs etc. fail to function satisfactorily, transplantation is the only option.
  • These grafts cannot be taken from any source as they would be rejected sooner or later.
  • Before undertaking graft/ transplant, tissue matching and blood group matching are essential.
  • Even after this, a person has to take immune-suppressants all his/her life to reduce the risk of graft rejection.
  • Cell-mediated immune response plays a major role in graft rejection as the immune system recognizes the proteins on the graft or transplanted tissue/ organ.
