# Concept of Percent and Percentage

#### definition

Percentages: Per cent is derived from the Latin word 'per centum' meaning 'per hundred'. Percentages are numerators of fractions with denominator 100.

# Percentage:

• Per cent is derived from the Latin word ‘per centum’ meaning ‘per hundred’.

• Percentages are numerators of fractions with denominator 100.

• The percent is represented by the symbol % and means hundredths too. That is 1% means 1 out of hundred or one-hundredths.

• It can be written as: 1% = 1/100 = 0.01.

• For example, 40/100 = 40 % and 90/100 = 90%

# Percentages when the total is not hundred:

• When a ratio is not expressed in fraction of 100, we need to convert the fraction to an equivalent fraction with denominator 100.

• Example:
Consider a fraction 12/20.

Multiply the numerator and denominator by 5.

= 12/20 = (12 xx 5)/(20 xx 5) = 60/100 = 60%.

or
Multiply by 100.

= 12/20 xx 100 = 12 xx 5 = 60%
or
Multiply the numerator and denominator by 100.

= 12/20 xx 100/100 = 60%.
