The Fundamental Unit of Life: Cell

  • Organelles together constitute the basic unit called the cell.
  • The cell is the basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all known organisms.
  • A cell is the smallest unit of life.
  • Cells are often called the "building blocks of life".
  • Cells come together to form tissues and tissues in turn form organs. (Cells – tissue – organs).
  • Each living cell has the capacity to perform certain basic functions that are characteristic of all living forms.

Types of Cell:

  • The smallest cell in the human body is the sperm cell.
  • The largest cell in the human body is Egg cells (ovum). 
  • The longest cell is the nerve cell.
  • The largest cell is the egg cell of the ostrich.
