Asexual Reproduction in Plant:

  • Asexual reproduction produces plants that are genetically identical to the parent plant because that does not involve the fusion of male and female gametes.
  • In asexual reproduction in plants, plants are reproduced without the formation of seeds.
  • Asexual reproduction produces plants that thrive well in stable environments because they carry genes identical to those of their parents. They are exact copies of their parents.
  • Asexual reproduction does not require the investment required to produce a flower, attract pollinators, or find a means of seed dispersal.
  • The individuals formed by this method is morphologically and genetically identical and are called clones.
  • It is common among single-celled organisms and in plants having relatively simple organizations.

Types of Asexual Reproduction in Plants:

Asexual reproduction in plants can occur naturally or humans can control asexual reproduction in plants artificially for their own purposes. In plants, asexual reproduction is carried out via two methods:

  1. Natural Method
  2. Artificial Method

A) Natural Methods:

Natural methods of asexual reproduction include strategies that plants have developed to self-propagate. The different ways in which a plant self propagates are mentioned below:

  1. Budding
  2. Fragmentation
  3. Spore Formation (Sporogenesis)
  4. Natural vegetative reproduction: Stems, roots, leaves
  5. Agamospermy

B) Artificial methods:

An artificial method includes strategies when many plants are grown from a single plant using man-made processes. Following are the artificial methods of asexual reproduction in plants:

  1. Cutting
  2. Grafting
  3. Layering
  4. Suckering
  5. Micropropagation
